Few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to speak with Romanian author Cristina Istrati. She’s written a historical romance novel titled Noble Temptation. The setting is 19th century Austria and the protagonist, Elisabeth Waidhofen, a village girl who travels to Vienna in search of a better life. At first, she finds work in a tavern. Her life soon takes a dramatic turn when she meets Count Andreas, a noble man, who cannot resist Elizabeth’s pristine beauty. He falls in love.

This reminds me of the Sissi series played by Romy Schneider in the queen Elisabeth of Austria. I was a teenager, and the euphoria was unmistakable, especially among the girls. It was a trilogy consisting of Sissi (1955,) The Young Empress (1956), and Faithful Years of an Empress (1957.) “Did Romy inspire you when you were writing this novel?” I asked her.

“Yes, but not so much,” she said, “But it helped me to see the [lavish] life of the high Viennese society in that period of time.”

Cristina is, indeed, a great storyteller as recognized by many in the literary world, especially in her native country of Romania where she was awarded the Mihai Eminescu International Literature for her first novel Seductive Ambiguity.
