A conversation with author Brandy Cagle

Two weeks ago, I had the privilege to have a conversation with author Brandy Cagle. She is the author of a fantasy novel titled Dreams of Darkness and Desire. This is a story about a young lady named Kira Lockwood who apparently has everything going for her—moving with her best friend, developing an affectionate relationship with her boyfriend, and doing great in her dance classes. Her life seems rosy and very promising until she finds herself dwelling in a gulf of nightmarish dreams—”erotic, shifting from seduction to drowning, burial, and abduction in the span of seconds.”

I asked Brandy if this story, so meticulous and beautifully penned, is based on her personal life. “Actually, I was working and traveling…..with the opioid epidemic. I had been having these crazy nightmares myself. This is where it came from,” she said, throwing a sarcastic laugh. She went on to say that “I was telling my sister about it, and she said that I should write a book…” Since then, Brandy had been hard at work, penning the story.

Of course, like all fantasy writers, Brandy has turned the story into a trilogy. One thing I admire about Brandy is her passion for literature. She is from South Carolina, and that says it all. Southern literature is one of the most revered in the country. Remember Harper Lee, Alice Walker? More recently, writers like Michelle Jackson from New Orleans, Thomas Ott from Alabama and more. The southern charm is clearly visible while weaving through the pages of Dreams of Darkness and Desire.

Although Dreams of Darkness and Desire is Brandy’s debut novel, it is fair to say the author’s career as a writer is very promising. She has a powerful quote that summarizes all aspects of her passion for creative writing. “I am a reader. I am a writer. I am a creative. My characters are my art. They live in my mind, my heart, and they seem to float on my very breath. Putting pen to paper allows me to make them real and bring them to life.”
