The people of this historic town of northern Haiti have finally said enough! According to eyewitnesses, what started as a complaint by few individuals against corrupt local authorities quickly turned into a full-blown demonstration against rising fuel prices, basic commodities and the unsustainable living conditions. From Vertus, the northern part of town, they swooped toward downtown. As more people joined them, they swelled the streets on their way to the mayor’s office, taking on Amos Joseph, the town’s commissioner and Gaston, the mayor.
Saint Louis du Nord has always been a stubborn town, well described in Ardain Isma’s powerful novel Midnight at Noon. What is now needed is an Olivier Zebada, fictional revolutionary leader to lead the drive to cleanse Haiti of its enemies—local or international. Bravo Saint Louis! Watch the video below.
