The struggle to reach the plateau of literary success is a difficult one. Only those with a deeply rooted conviction will get there. Does it mean you have to stop writing? No. Writers write for a reason. I can speak for myself and for many writers out there who feel they write because they have stories to share with the world. Luckily, unlike everyone else, we have a God-given ability to translate ideas into words.
Marketing is not an easy undertaking. It requires tireless effort and motivation. Success will ultimately feel sweet because of those pitfalls you were able to overcome over the years. If your book sales are low, it doesn’t mean your story is irrelevant. It means it has not been made available to the right audience. How do you find those readers who would be interested in your story? There are so many ways out there to promote books— enough to besiege your mind. On top of that, none of the tricks to selling books is cheap.
Years ago, I wrote Everybody is Making Money but the Writers. It was a piece about this same topic. Publishers, advertisers, bookmakers all make millions yearly over struggling writers whose emotions can be effortlessly preyed on.
So far, I have written three novels. Part of their limited success derives from a readership base I have managed to build. Moreover, I have learned to stick to one or two strategies. Then, I wait. Patience is key in life. I hope you will do the same.
