Few weeks ago, I had the privilege to speak with Canadian author Paul Stuart. We talked about his latest novel titled A Drowned Kingdom. It is a story about a prince named Othrun who rules over the mightiest kingdom known to mankind. He is now leading his people to an uncertain future “far across the Shimmering Sea.” In the perilous journey, they are lost under the waves. The prince, the protagonist of the story, must overcome countless of obstacles in the process, “wiping out idolatry and pagan worships” to build a new kingdom out of a mysterious continent—a place that “has for centuries been ravaged by warlords competing for supremacy and mages channeling the mystic powers of the elements―and unite the continent under godly rule.”
A Drowned Kingdom has a historical undertone that cannot be ignored. Like most fantasy novelists, Paul draws from his intellectual background, his knowledge about the colonial history to pen this story this way. In fact, he graduated with a minor in History and “I have always been fascinated with history. From Egypt to colonial Britain to imperial Rome….,” Paul gleefully said.
A Drowned Kingdom is book one of what is shaping up to be a long series. The fantasy writer is currently working on book two. “It’s a seven-book series. You’re going to have to read seven books,” Paul said in an interesting form of sarcasm. Throughout the conversation, you can see the passion in his eyes, his love for fantasy as a genre in literature. To learn more about Paul Stuart’s works, you can visit his website.
