It was with great surprise we read the many curious notes about the Benito’s story. Benito Martinez Abogan was the man who transcended three centuries. He was born in the southern Haitian town of Cavaillon in 1880. In 1925, he traveled to Cuba, where he had living until his death in October of 2006 at the age of 126. This was a record. He was already 45, when he left Haiti.
His dream was to be able to return to his native land before he died. But he never got the wish. In his interview with Angela Oramas Camero from Granma International, Benito explained how he managed to survive this long. He never had any children. He ate mostly organic food, and because he lived in a rural environment, his life was spared from the hectically stressful condition of the city. He spent a good part of his live in eastern Cuba, in a farm near the village of Vicente. He was honored by the city of Ciego de Avila for his longevity and was also awarded a modest home well furnished.
Benito was among a large group of elderly Cubans who outlived all expectations. His story teaches us that if we can manage our stress and our worries and we eat the right food, can live a long and healthy life. Happiness is everything, and it doesn’t necessarily mean living in a fancy home, driving a fancy car down a fancy neighborhood. It’s all about your inner self or the way you feel about yourself. We may not live to be 126, but we certainly can live a longer life.
