As promised, this is the second and final part of my conversation with Sudhir Hazareesingh, a professor at the University of Oxford. He is a historian and the author of Black Spartacus, an award-winning biography about the life of Toussaint Louverture known as the precursor of the Haitian independence. In part one published on Wednesday, we talk about Toussaint’s bravery and skillfulness as a military general—his victories over the different factions of the colonial powers in Saint Domingue.

In this video, we focus on what intellectuals, academics, and many statesmen say of Toussaint. There are many other things about which I wanted to talk to prof. Hazareesingh; but time was not in our favor. For instance, Toussaint’s upbringing, his African-born parents, his devotion to Catholicism etc. Perhaps, he might someday return to The Conversation to cover those aspects of Toussaint’s life—a man who was born a slave and rose to prominence to become the most powerful black man of the 18th century.
