The legendary Cameroonian saxophonist Manu Dibango passed away on Tuesday in Paris after he reportedly caught the coronavirus. Dibango—best known for his 1972 hit Soul Makossa—is one of the first global stars to die from Covid-19. An icon in the world of jazz, Dibango collaborated with numerous artists over a long career, including US pianist Herbie Hancock and Nigeria’s Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.

Here in the United States, Bibango once made the headlines after he filed a lawsuit in 2009 against Michael Jackson whom he accused of stealing a hook from his song, Soul Makossa, for two tracks on the world’s best-selling album, Thriller. MJ was reported to settle the case out of court. Manu Dibango was 86.
