Yesterday, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law clearing the way for him to run for two more presidential terms. If he wins, this could potentially extend his presidency until 2036.
Putin turns 69 this year. He is currently serving his fourth presidential term, which ends in 2024. This law was enacted by the Russian Duma, where Putin’ s political party is in the majority. It was put in a referendum last year. The new law formalizes the results of last year’s referendum on amendments to Russia’s constitution. The announcement was made yesterday. There is a great possibility that Putin may be president for another 12 years.
