Left to fend for herself, today Haiti crosses another milestones—a new birthday in the thickest fog of misery. Kidnapping is rampant. Mass killings continue. Haitian authorities, as always, have taken a blind eye. An Amnesty international report says that the Haitian government is the prime source for the insecurity. They have hired armed gangs to conduct extrajudicial killings while the national police force has been morphed into a tool to suppress decent. Haiti is two-hundred- and-sixteen years old today. Yet, more than two centuries later, the country is still pinned down, unable to find its way to sociopolitical and economic empowerment. We can only hope that 2021 is the year that brings salvation to the land of Dessalines.
