Few weeks ago, I had the chance to have a nice conversation with Kay Iscah, the author of Seventh Night, a fantasy novel. It is a story about “a boy who fell in love with a girl not long before a princess married a charming prince, and if the boy had been the prince or the girl had not been the princess, this might have been a simple fairytale romance.” Unfortunately, the boy was not. However, the girl was. So, this was the beginning a long and complicated saga.

I asked Iscah if there is a lesson she wants to teach society in Seventh Night. “There are several lessons learned by the characters as they go along.  It’s not intended to be singular social lesson, but hopefully some of the messages will resonate with readers depending on where they are in life.” Unlike many fantasy authors, Seventh Night is a standalone story, “but I’m writing a prequel set of stories called Before the Fairytale, which follows the main characters during childhood.  I have two out.  The third is finished, but I’ve had a lot of interruptions getting the book out. The fourth is in progress.  I have ideas for continuing adventures, but I also have a lot of other books I want to write.”

Because a lot of fantasy writers have gained fame in writing series, I asked Iscah if a writer has to be prolific to become a serious fantasy writer. “Absolutely not. Being prolific is helpful from a marketing standpoint because if a reader likes one book by an author, he’s more likely to read other books by that author or set in that world.  It’s also helpful from a practice perspective, because you tend to get better at something the more you do it.”

Kay Iscah is also a businesswoman. She has her own small press. She co-authored a nonfiction book titled Living Single on a Minimum Wage. To learn more about Kay Iscah, you can visit her author website.
