The news came last week as a surprise. In a television address to the nation, vice-president Samia Suluhu Hassan said the president died earlier in the day in a hospital in Dar es Salaam, the country’s capital. Magufuli had not been seen in public for more than two weeks, and rumors had been circulating about his health. Opposition politicians said he had contracted Covid-19, but this had not been confirmed.

Heads of state across the African continent had sent their condolences to the people of Tanzania. Magufuli was nicknamed “bulldozer” for his works on rebuilding the infrastructure of his country. Tanzania, located in east Africa, is one the better-off countries of Sub-Saharan Africa. Arguably, Magufuli enjoyed great popular support. But the president had his critics and, in some respects, he was very controversial. He was a prominent coronavirus skeptic. At the start of the pandemic, he called for prayers and herbal-infused steam therapy to counter the virus. The country is now being run by Samia Suluhu Hassan as the country’s new president.
