Two weeks ago, Kourtney Halsey, a sophomore at Raines High School in Jacksonville, Florida, was declared the winner of the Global Black History Essay Contest sponsored by the Duval Schools District’s Department of World Languages. In her essay, the young high school sophomore expressed her desire to make a contribution to the world by creating a non-profit agency which would focus on supporting the homeless. Kourtney received her certificate during an award presentation at City Hall.

Dr. Joanne Davis, Dr. Ardain Isma and Ms. Myra Johnson represented the WL Department during the ceremony. Kourtney was accompanied by her mother, Ms. Halsey, who is herself a reading coach at Mandarin Middle School. The Mayor was out of town, but Ms. Betzy Santiago presented the award to Kourtney on his behalf. After the ceremony at City Hall, Kourtney was treated to lunch at Maggiano’s Italian Restaurant at the exclusive Saint John’s Town Center.  More pictures can be found in our FB fan page. www.facebook.com/csmsmagazine
