According to NBC News, the Afghan city of Zaranj has fallen to the Taliban. Zaranj is a city in southwestern Afghanistan. It is the capital of the region. Local officials have confirmed the fall.

This victory constitutes a major blow to government forces. The militants continue to make rapid advances in the country, as foreign troops are leaving. According to the BBC, large parts of the countryside are now under the control of the Taliban. Other major cities are now being targeted, including Herat in the west, and the southern city of Lashkar Gah, in Helmand province. Zaranj is an important trading center near the border with Iran.
