Dubois’ Souls of Black Folks excerpt

By Ardain Isma

CSMS Magazine

The Souls of Black Folk is without a doubt one of the main reference points in African-American studies. To understand the importance of this scholarly written manuscript, one needs to contextualize Dubois’ analyses within a historical framework. Dubois was born in New England in 1868, three years after Lincoln’s emancipation proclamation that freed all slaves and abolished slavery as a means of farming production in the American South. His father, a Haitian, abandoned the family very early in his life. Few historical accounts are found linking Dubois’ pubic remarks about his father’s side—although he had acknowledged that Haitian politician Elie Dubois was either his father’s brother or cousin.
